The phrase “boarding school” brings to mind colorful and disparate imagery; from feisty teens and tough love to stuffy dress codes, privileged families and ivy-covered halls.  Upon arrival to Scattergood Friends School's campus, you might be greeted by Jet or Pete (our four-legged ambassadors), help yourself to a crate of surplus tomatoes near the front door, wave to a student skateboarding to From Harlem to Hip Hop class... and what you think you know about boarding school quickly dissolves.

The campus, set in rural West Branch and less than 15 miles east of Iowa City, has an unassuming, simple feel that some have described as “school meets summer camp.”  In the spirit of simplicity and equality, all students, faculty and administrators work on a daily rotating crew system to cook and clean, plant and harvest.  Everyone is on a first name basis.

Scattergood students are independent, open minded, and ready to embrace the academic challenge of a hands-on, experiential college preparatory curriculum.  They’re eager to experience a small and diverse school community where everyone lives, works and plays together.  Many of them wanted more than their local public and private high schools could offer, did their own research, and presented the possibility of Scattergood to their families.

Scattergood has a reputation for expert teachers who engage students in problem solving and critical thinking through unconventional course offerings ranging from Prairie Management and Food Preservation to Tolkien Elvish and Rock Band.   Because of this, our school draws day students from Iowa City and boarding students from all over the United States and as far as South America, Europe, Asia and Africa.  Scattergood’s Quaker foundation gives welcome to families of all faith traditions and generous tuition assistance ensures that students come from a spectrum of socioeconomic backgrounds.

Like many parents, you’re excited to be considering new possibilities for your child’s high school education.  It’s natural to have a lot of questions and not know where to start.  Let's talk!

Let's talk!
