Joey Giffen-Hunter
- B.F.A. in Glass Blowing, Ohio State University 1999

My own high school experience attending a Friends boarding school played a big part in my family's decision to join the Scattergood Community. When I first came to Scattergood in 1999 with my wife Sarah and our son, Lake, I taught Ceramics, Stained Glass and Glass Blowing. In 2003, I was able to transfer my creative energy to Scattergood's buildings and grounds, feeling that in the position of Facilities Director, I could contribute most to the school. I gained a lot of satisfaction from fixing things both big and small and generally making the place a better place to live. In 2008 I switched responsibilities again. As Advancement Assistant, I help out in Scattergood's Development and Admissions departments. I am also the person handling our marketing and outreach efforts.
I liken my experience of switching from my public school to a small Quaker boarding school to that of transitioning from a difficult winter into a verdant spring. Up through eighth grade, my public school experience lacked caring, supportive friends and a sense of community. When I arrived at Quaker boarding school I felt like I had found a new home. As a husband, father and employee, I have found a home at Scattergood, and I love it!
