Biography:

I came to Scattergood in 1993, and have done a variety of jobs here over the years. Most recently I've been cooking for the school and teaching Quakerism and various art- and farm-related projects. My newest endeavor is to design and teach a comprehensive Health curriculum for our freshmen and new sophomores.

I work with students to cook meals for the community almost every day. We enjoy the camaraderie of working together on a creative project, and by working in a from-scratch kitchen, students learn that food doesn't come from a mix or a freezer box. It doesn't even have to come from the grocery store! Working with vegetables, eggs, and meat from the Scattergood farm is one of the great pleasures of my life here. As they prepare the farm's bounty in our kitchen, students can remember the classes they've done at the farm and the time they've spent with the animals and plants, while they exercise creativity in preparing a meal to serve to others.

I also enjoy teaching art. I like watching students devote themselves to learning and refining skills, and to trying to make an inner vision into concrete form in paper or paint.

I love to watch students grow in grace and confidence over the months or years they spend here. I like that I get to know various sides of them as we encounter each other in different contexts, and it's a pleasure to live alongside them in the community.

When I'm not working at Scattergood, I enjoy being outside on the school's prairie and farm, watching the domestic and wild plants and animals adjust to the seasons. I spend my summers in the Virginia mountains as Camp Director for Shiloh Quaker Camp, a youth wilderness camp run by Baltimore Yearly Meeting. My most common spare time activities include running and reading. Depending on when you knocked, you could also find me making sauerkraut, playing the violin, training my dog, reading comic books, or knitting an elaborate hat.
