Courtney McDermott
B.A., English, Mount Holyoke, 2005
Though originally from Iowa, Courtney spent the last six years living outside of her home state. She attended Mount Holyoke and earned her B.A. in English, prepared to be a starving writer. She spent some time studying creative writing in Los Angeles and interning at a publishing house in Minneapolis, and then decided to join the Peace Corps. Last year she taught English in Lesotho and found Africa to be brilliantly complex, exciting and frustrating. Upon returning to the States, she came to Scattergood to work as a Humanities teacher, Girls' Dorm Sponsor and Librarian. She finds it gratifying to be sharing her passions of writing and literature with the students at Scattergood, has found that this unique community is providing her with a lot of good stories to write about too!
