In spite of (or perhaps because of) serious deficiencies in high school math and science, I somehow turned a major in astronomy into majors in astronomy, physics, and mathematics. Feeling I still didn't know enough, I went on to complete a year of graduate work in physics, where, sitting in front of a blackboard's worth of mathematics one day, I had the sudden realization that I needed to do something more "real". A few days later, I found myself petitioning the academic "powers that be" for a spot in the College of Education.
A master's thesis and a year teaching in a public school later, I now call Scattergood home. I truly enjoy the strong sense of community, something I felt was lacking back in "city life" and find that Scattergood is an excellent place for nurturing growth as students, teachers, individuals, and, above all, human beings. This being the case, I married my friend and partner, Jenny in the Hickory Grove Meeting House in the summer of 2008, and we brought our son, Benjamin into the world in April of 2009. The three of us live here at Scattergood.
I teach (you guessed it) math and science and am also a boy's dorm sponsor. Should I find myself with spare time, I enjoy playing classical guitar, reading, cooking, and watching the subtle change of the seasons. I am also a practitioner of Zen meditation and mindfulness and a student of chado (Japanese tea ceremony).
