Work Crews

Letter from the Facilities Coordinator

Greetings from the facilities desk of Scattergood Friends School! As Facilities Director I often find myself stepping back, looking at our campus, and trying to define what makes Scattergood's facilities unique. What stands out to me is the fact that Scattergood has no full-time maintenance staff—this in fact is a real benefit. I oversee and coordinate general maintenance and upkeep, as well as campus improvements, and the Crew Program. Over the years all members of the Scattergood community have done the work of keeping the campus in order. Students and staff take ownership of our campus through our cooperative work program. We all clean things, fix things, plant things, and build things.

The mark of the ever-changing Scattergood community has been left on our campus for more than a century. Students laid the Art Building's blocks in the 1950's. In the 60's students helped erect the Science Building. Building patios and decks, completing office renovations, painting, and the like have all been recent work projects. Furthermore, students and staff have long invested time, energy, and vision into various arboreal and horticultural projects.

As a person who is always looking for things to fix I often find my 'to-do' list growing at too swift a pace. I wonder where we'll find the time to get to everything. Yet each morning I sit amongst the community in our very inviting Meetinghouse—a small building wherein people have gathered in collective silence since 1866—and I realize what makes our campus beautiful. We do! I hope you'll have the chance to visit!
