Fine Arts

At Scattergood, we believe the creative process is integral to a complete education. Students gain an understanding of the creative process through experience with a variety of media and opportunities for expression. Students learn to respect this sensitivity in themselves and others, and in the wonder of the world around them. This learning can be integrated into other disciplines, bringing with it the capacity to be inventive, searching, and able to generate solutions to the questions of "what if" and "what else." Students recognize the art of doing something well, and are able to find the value in the work itself. It is hoped that graduates will continue to be supportive of creative endeavors, and will remain interested, if not active participants, in the arts. Students have the opportunity to take art courses during Project time. Held on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons for an hour and a half, students are expected to use Project time to focus on an area of personal importance. For many, the fine arts is that area. Scattergood maintains a building devoted exclusively towards the arts (housing a kiln, stained glass studio, drawing studio, and glassblowing studio). We also have a woodshop and a weaving studio, as well as a multi-functional auditorium. The program offerings, though already quite diverse, are also regularly expanded to take advantage of current staff talent. Some course offerings have been: calligraphy, dulcimer building, printmaking, kayak building, mask carving, and medieval art. Other project offerings considered practical arts are either seasonal or situational, and have included: farm project, GIS mapping, poultry project, food preservation and carpentry. Project offerings in the practical arts enable students to benefit from involvement in almost every aspect of the school. Our aim is to fully utilize our facilities and staff talents, offering something for everyone at all times. Students at Scattergood have ample opportunities for exposure to, and involvement in, almost all forms of art, and we intend to continue offering quality programs in creative endeavors.
