Block System

Scattergood's modified block schedule is well suited to the fulfillment of core college preparatory curriculum requirements while affording us the opportunity to offer varied and creative classes. The academic year is divided into eight month-long blocks. Courses may last two, four, or eight blocks. The weekly schedule is similar to many liberal arts colleges with courses meeting either on Monday, Wednesday and Friday (MWF), or Tuesday and Thursday (TTh). Within each day, class periods range from 50 to 100 minutes long.

This template enables us to schedule classes creatively:

  • Mathematics and foreign language are taught all year and meet for 50-minutes on MWF with one additional lab meeting per week.
  • Grade-level seminar courses are taught all year and meet for 50 minutes on TTh.
  • Science and social studies are taught on alternating semesters and meet MWF for 100 minutes.
  • Humanities courses (e.g. English-literature and composition; philosophy; Quakerism and religious studies, etc.) are taught for two blocks and meet TTh for 100 minutes.
  • In the afternoon, a variety of practical and fine art projects and P.E. courses, usually lasting two blocks, meet MWF for 90 minutes.
