Athletics

At Scattergood, we currently have two running varsity teams (co-ed soccer and basketball) as well as several intramural sports (PE) including fitness training, fencing (advanced students compete at the University of Iowa), volleyball, indoor soccer and Ultimate Frisbee. All of these sports, varsity and intramural, focus on developing not only specific skills and physical fitness, but also an appreciation of the difficulty of accomplishing a set of goals with a large group of students, or the satisfaction of achieving something a student once believed they were incapable of doing. It is important to point out, however, that these lofty moral goals do not in any way change the basic nature of the Varsity Program. That is, to become an accomplished player of either soccer or basketball, students need to be ready to work extremely hard. Many of the practice sessions here are not for the faint of heart. Though the importance of "winning" is downplayed, the idea of becoming as good as you can is not. It takes a great amount of effort to build oneself to his or her peak abilities and we encourage each student to do just that.
