Scattergood offers a solid college preparatory academic curriculum balanced with experiential learning in both academic and non-academic classes.  Students must be enrolled in each of the five core disciplines: Math, Science, Social Studies, Language and Humanities, each year.   Mornings are spent in a rotating schedule of academic courses including Mathematics, Sciences, Foreign Languages and Social Studies, while students spend afternoons in Humanities and Projects.  Each day from 4:30 – 6:05, students take part in Physical Education.

 

Mathematic Offerings:  Algebra 1, 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Calculus – A.P. Calculus A/B, Calculus B/C, Statistics and Micro and Macro Economics, are all offered as independent studies

Science Offerings: Environmental Science, Biology 1 & 2, Chemistry, Physics and A.P Courses as needed

Social Studies Offerings:  US Government, US History, World History, Global Issues       

Language Offerings:  Spanish 1 – 5 (Spanish 6 as needed) ,  ELL (English Language Learning) 1-4

 

Seminar courses provide students with a solid foundation in writing and research, while Humanities help students learn to analyze text and think creatively.

                                    Sophomore Seminar: Comp 2: Styles of Writing
                                    Junior Seminar: Comp 3: Research Paper, Part 1
                                    Senior Seminar: Comp 4: Research Paper, Part 2 (Senior Thesis)

 

Humanities Offerings:  Quakerism 1 & 2, Comparative Religions (required for graduation),  Food for Thought (required for Freshman), Spoken Word, Women's Literature, Colonial Literature, British Literature, Native American Literature, Latin American Literature, Biography,  Poetry,  Playwriting, Creative Writing, Short Stories, Harlem to Hip-Hop,  Justice and Punishment, Messianic Motif in Film, The Hero's Journey

               

Independent Studies are often approved to meet a student’s needs for coursework that is not offered within the standard schedule.  Independent Studies can be in Academics, Humanities, Project or Physical Education Courses.  Independent Study Courses have ranged from Piano Composition and Film Production to AP Psychology and Outdoor Survival Skills.
