Academics at Scattergood Friends School

Letter from the Academic Office

Welcome! Scattergood offers a first-rate liberal arts education designed to provide students with the skills they need to succeed in college and in life after higher education. We pursue academic excellence within a learning community in which we encourage students to explore a wide range of interests and give them the opportunity to focus on topics in depth. We are bonded together both in our pursuit of academic excellence and in our commitment to community, both the Scattergood community and the wider global community. We recognize each staff member and student as an equally valuable member of the community. As we work together and individually toward our larger goals, we strive to help encourage and learn from each other.

At Scattergood, students are able to explore their passions and discover new interests in innovative classes and through extracurricular opportunities. Teachers have an opportunity to get to know their students as individuals and are therefore able to construct classes that meaningfully engage the students. Small, discussion-oriented classes allow students to intellectually develop in a supportive environment. We hope that the education students receive at Scattergood becomes the basis for a lifelong love of learning. With this in mind, instruction at the school is designed to help students learn to think critically, express ideas effectively, and interrelate information in a variety of subject areas.
